5–6 The beheadings of Elijah and John the Baptist are implicitly connected. Taken up to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11–12), Elijah returned in the person of John the Baptist, according to prophecy (Malachi 4:5–6) and Gospel (Matthew 11:14, 17:9–13; Mark 9:11–13; and Luke 1:17). Compare the explanatory notes for Pilgrimages in the Holy Land (art. 38), where sites highlighted by the author are frequently places associated with the biblical stories of Elijah and John the Baptist.
