Acknowledgments

My deepest gratitude goes to Russell Peck, former General Editor of the Middle English Texts Series, without whom this volume would not exist. Russell first proposed this project to me over a decade ago and his generous and insightful thoughts whenever I consulted him on the edition were invaluable. Russell’s steadfast encouragement and his faith in me and the value of this project helped me persist through various challenges, ranging from eye surgery to lack of library access during stints living overseas. I could not have done this without him. Special thanks are due to Pamela Yee, Managing Editor of the series, who shepherded me through every stage of the volume, especially the editorial and submission processes, and did the final read through. I am very grateful to Anna Siebach-Larsen, Executive Director of METS, who not only did a content read but also photographed relevant portions of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 399, so I could view color images of the manuscript, and generously shared with me her diplomatic transcription of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 652 before I was able to get a digital microfilm copy. Thank you to Rosemary Paprocki, who helped me gain access to microfilms in the Robbins Library. The editorial team at the University of Rochester did superlative work: Sharon Rhodes, who did the initial formatting; Kyle Huskin, who read the Middle English poem against the manuscripts and checked the textual notes; and Eleanor Price, who read the edition against the manuscripts. Special thanks go to Phillip Zaborny, who read the Middle English text against Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Additional B. 107 and the Anglo-Norman text against Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 399, and who also drafted descriptions of the decorated and illuminated initials for the textual notes for both the Middle English and Anglo-Norman poems. Daniel Kephart and Juan Espinosa performed a full bibliography check, and Daniel Kephart, James Norris, and Juan Espinosa formatted the volume; I appreciate their hard work. Associate Editors Susanna Fein and Alan Lupack did a comprehensive reading of the volume, and I am grateful for their helpful feedback; their comments improved the volume immeasurably. I am also indebted to the current General Editor Thomas Hahn for his encouragement and inspiration. Thanks go also to Elizabeth Robertson, who first introduced me to medieval devotional literature. Finally, I am grateful to my family, Brian and Vera, for always being here for me, even when my attention is fixed on the Middle Ages.

The production of this volume was partially funded by the National Endowment of the Humanities. I am grateful to the libraries that provided microfilms of some of the manuscripts I consulted: the British Library, London, and the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
